Frequently Asked Question
At Bond Studio NY, we believe in transparency and a personalized approach. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about ICE Cold Fusion Extensions, Handmade Micro K-Tips, Slavic hair, maintenance, aftercare, and the consultation process.
ICE Cold Fusion Extensions
What are ICE Cold Fusion Extensions?
ICE Cold Fusion Extensions are applied strand by strand using a cold-fusion method without heat during application. The small, discreet bonds allow for customized placement, density, and natural movement.
What makes ICE Cold Fusion different from traditional extensions?
ICE is an individual strand method rather than a tape or weft system. Each strand is applied separately, allowing the installation to be customized according to your natural hair density, placement needs, and desired result.
Why is density matching important with ICE Extensions?
Density matching is an essential part of an ICE installation. A small bond does not automatically mean that every extension strand is appropriate for every section of the natural hair.
Natural density can vary throughout the head, so the amount and weight of extension hair should be selected according to the natural hair supporting each strand. At Bond Studio, we consider natural density, strand strength, placement, and the desired result when creating your installation plan. This allows us to avoid unnecessarily heavy strands in finer areas while building appropriate density where the natural hair can support it.
Are ICE Extensions suitable for fine or thin hair?
Fine hair requires careful consideration of strand weight, density, placement, and the amount of extension hair being added. During your consultation, we assess your natural hair and determine whether ICE Extensions are appropriate and how the installation should be customized.
Will the ICE bonds show?
ICE bonds are designed to be small and discreet. Placement is customized according to your natural density, haircut, and styling habits to help keep the extensions concealed.
How long can I wear ICE Extensions?
ICE Extensions are typically worn for approximately three months before professional removal and reinstallation. Timing can vary depending on natural hair growth, density, lifestyle, and aftercare.
How long does an ICE Cold Fusion installation take?
Installation time depends primarily on the number of strands being applied and the complexity of the transformation. ICE Cold Fusion installations generally require 4+ hours for the installation itself, with larger strand counts requiring additional time.
After installation, additional time is reserved for your complimentary haircut and styling.
How are ICE Extensions removed?
Each bond is professionally released and carefully separated from the natural hair. Extensions should always be professionally removed rather than removed at home.
Handmade Micro K-Tips
What are Handmade Micro K-Tips?
Micro K-Tips are individual strand extensions attached using small keratin bonds. At Bond Studio, each Micro K-Tip is individually handcrafted in-studio using Italian keratin and customized for the client's natural hair.
What makes Bond Studio's Micro K-Tips different from pre-made K-Tips?
Because each strand is handcrafted, the bond size and strand weight can be customized instead of using one standard size throughout the entire installation. This gives us greater control over density, placement, and the finished result.
Why is density matching important with Micro K-Tips?
Natural hair does not have the same density throughout the entire head. Because Bond Studio's Micro K-Tips are individually handcrafted, strand weight and bond size can be adjusted for different areas of the hair rather than relying on one standard pre-made strand size.
Density matching helps us determine how much extension hair each section of the natural hair can appropriately support and is an important part of creating a customized installation.
Are all of your Micro K-Tips the same size?
No. Each Micro K-Tip is handcrafted in-studio, allowing the bond size and strand weight to be customized according to your natural density and the area where the strand will be placed.
Are Micro K-Tips suitable for fine hair?
Fine hair requires careful consideration of strand weight, bond size, density, and placement. Suitability is determined during your consultation after assessing the condition and density of your natural hair.
How long can I wear Micro K-Tips?
Micro K-Tips are generally worn for approximately three months before professional removal. Your individual maintenance schedule may vary depending on natural hair growth, density, lifestyle, and aftercare.
How long does a Micro K-Tip installation take?
Installation time depends on the number of strands being applied and the complexity of the transformation. Micro K-Tip installations generally require 3+ hours for the installation itself, with larger strand counts requiring additional time.
Additional time is reserved afterward for your complimentary haircut and styling.
Choosing Your Extension Method
How do I know whether ICE or Micro K-Tips are best for me?
The appropriate method depends on your natural hair, density, condition, lifestyle, styling habits, and desired result. During your consultation, we assess your hair and determine which method is better suited to your individual needs.
Can extensions be used just for volume?
Yes. Extensions can be customized for subtle fullness, additional density, length, or a combination of both.
How many strands will I need?
There is no universal strand count. The amount depends on your natural density, haircut, current length, desired length, and the amount of volume you want. Your recommended strand count is determined during your consultation.
Hair Quality & Sourcing
What kind of extension hair does Bond Studio use?
Bond Studio NY works with premium Slavic hair selected for its softness, movement, and natural-looking blend.
For clients seeking a more exclusive option, virgin single-donor Slavic hair is also available and individually sourced for each client.
What is virgin single-donor Slavic hair?
Virgin single-donor Slavic hair comes from one individual donor and has not been chemically colored or processed. Each bundle retains its own natural color, texture, density, and individual characteristics.
Is virgin single-donor hair kept in stock?
No. Virgin single-donor Slavic hair is individually sourced following your consultation. Available donor options are reviewed based on your natural hair and desired result before a bundle is selected.
Can virgin single-donor hair be used for both ICE and Micro K-Tips?
Yes. Virgin single-donor Slavic hair can be individually prepared for either ICE Cold Fusion Extensions or Handmade Micro K-Tips.
Do I own my virgin single-donor hair?
Yes. Once your donor bundle is selected and purchased, the complete bundle belongs to you. Only the amount needed for your installation is prepared, and any remaining hair continues to belong to you for future use.
Can extension hair be reused?
Yes, when the hair remains in suitable condition. Hair is evaluated at removal to determine whether it is appropriate for another installation.
Can K-Tip hair be rebonded and reused?
Yes. When the extension hair remains in suitable condition, it can be professionally prepared with new keratin bonds for reinstallation.
Can I bring my own extension hair?
Yes. Client-provided hair may be installed after it has been evaluated for quality and compatibility with the selected extension method.
Hair Health & Candidacy
Do hair extensions damage natural hair?
The health of your natural hair depends on several factors, including proper candidacy, appropriate strand weight and placement, length of wear, aftercare, and professional removal. This is why Bond Studio requires an in-person consultation for first-time clients before recommending an installation.
Can I get extensions if my hair is chemically damaged?
Possibly. Chemically compromised or fragile hair requires careful assessment and may require a more conservative approach to strand weight, density, and placement. In some cases, extensions may not be recommended until the natural hair is able to appropriately support them.
What happens to the natural hair that sheds while I'm wearing extensions?
Natural hair sheds every day. With individual strand extensions, some naturally shed hairs remain contained within the attachment until removal. Seeing shed hair during removal does not automatically mean that the extensions caused hair loss.
Haircut, Blending & Styling
Is a haircut included with my extension installation?
Yes. Every new extension installation at Bond Studio NY includes a complimentary haircut and styling following the installation.
Applying extensions is only one part of creating a natural-looking result. The extension hair must also be shaped and blended with your natural hair so the finished result moves cohesively rather than appearing like separate lengths of hair.
Why is cutting hair extensions different from a traditional haircut?
Extension cutting requires an understanding of both the client's natural haircut and the placement, density, and length of the added hair. The goal is to integrate the natural hair and extensions without unnecessarily removing the density or length the extensions were intended to create.
Marinela's foundation in precision haircutting includes training at the Aveda Institute and Ted Gibson Academy, along with more than 14 years of professional experience. This haircutting background is incorporated into every Bond Studio NY transformation.
How much additional time should I expect for the haircut and styling?
Following the extension installation, approximately 1–2 additional hours are reserved for the complimentary haircut, blending, and styling. The amount of time required depends on the transformation, density, length, and desired finished look.
Do I have to pay separately for the haircut and styling?
No. The finishing haircut and styling are complimentary with your new installation. They are considered part of completing the overall extension result at Bond Studio NY.
Washing & Aftercare
How should I wash my extensions?
Cleanse your scalp thoroughly without aggressively rubbing or tangling the attachment areas. Conditioner, oils, masks, and other heavy products should be kept away from the bonds and concentrated through the mid-lengths and ends.
How should I brush my extensions?
Use an extension-safe brush and brush regularly. Begin at the ends and work upward while supporting the hair. Gently maintaining the root and attachment areas also helps prevent naturally shed hair from tangling between the bonds.
Can I sleep with wet extensions?
No. Your hair and attachment areas should be thoroughly dried before sleeping. Sleeping with wet extensions can contribute to tangling and matting.
How should I wear my extensions while sleeping?
Once completely dry, loosely securing the hair in a low braid or ponytail can help minimize tangling while you sleep.
Styling & Lifestyle
Can I use hot tools on my extensions?
Yes. You can blow-dry, curl, and straighten your extensions. Use heat protection and avoid placing concentrated heat directly on the bonds.
Can I wear my hair in a ponytail or updo?
Yes. Individual strand extensions provide styling flexibility. Placement can also be planned around how you typically wear your hair.
Can I work out with extensions?
Yes. Extensions can accommodate an active lifestyle. If your scalp and attachment areas become wet from perspiration, they should be properly dried afterward.
Can I swim with extensions?
Yes, with proper care. Secure the hair before swimming, minimize tangling, and rinse thoroughly afterward. Frequent exposure to chlorine or salt water can affect the condition and longevity of extension hair.
Can I travel or go to the beach with extensions?
Yes. Extensions can be worn while traveling, but swimming, sun exposure, humidity, and changes in water quality may require additional aftercare.
Color & Chemical Services
Can extension hair be colored?
Color adjustments may be possible depending on the hair being used. Extension hair should be professionally evaluated before any chemical service, and we do not recommend bleaching, lightening, or chemically altering your extensions at home.
Can I color my natural hair while wearing extensions?
Depending on the service, yes. Your colorist should know that you are wearing extensions, and chemical products should be kept away from the attachment points when appropriate.
Should I color my natural hair before my consultation?
If you plan to change your hair color, we recommend completing your desired color before your extension consultation whenever possible. This allows us to match your extension hair to the color you intend to maintain.
Installation & Maintenance
How should I prepare my hair for installation?
Arrive with clean, completely dry hair. Clarify thoroughly before your appointment and avoid conditioner, oils, masks, or styling products near the roots. Conditioner may be used lightly on the ends if needed.
What is a reinstallation?
A reinstallation is the application of previously worn extension hair after it has been professionally removed and prepared for reuse. Removal is a separate service.
How often will I need maintenance?
ICE Cold Fusion and Micro K-Tip extensions are generally worn for approximately three months before professional removal and reinstallation. Your individual schedule may vary depending on natural hair growth, density, lifestyle, and aftercare.
Is it normal to lose some extension strands?
Yes. Some strand loss can occur during normal wear. The amount varies depending on your natural hair, lifestyle, aftercare, and length of wear. Significant or unusual shedding should be brought to our attention.
Consultations & Booking
Do I need a consultation before booking an installation?
Yes. An in-person consultation is required for all first-time clients before an installation can be scheduled. This allows us to assess your natural hair, discuss your goals, determine the appropriate method, and select the hair needed for your installation.
Do you offer virtual consultations?
No. First-time consultations are conducted in person so your natural hair, density, condition, color, and suitability for extensions can be properly assessed.
What happens during my consultation?
We assess your natural hair, density, condition, color, texture, and current haircut. We also discuss your desired length and volume, lifestyle, extension method, recommended strand count, hair selection, and estimated investment.
How do I book a consultation?
You can request a consultation through the Bond Studio website or contact us directly. Once your inquiry is received, we will work with you to arrange an available consultation time.
Is a deposit required to reserve an installation?
Yes. A $250 deposit is required to reserve your installation appointment and is applied toward your final balance. Cancellation and rescheduling terms apply.
